Welcome to the St Joseph’s School Council 

Here, at the School Council, our aim is to give every pupil an opportunity to share their ideas for improving the school. We want to make every member of the Saint Joseph’s School family feel safe, happy and welcome.

All of the classes hold an election to choose their School Councillors to represent them on the School Council.

Everyone’s ideas are heard at School Council. We take the most important issues and questions to our School Council meetings. The School Council meets regularly to discuss and make decisions on the views of their fellow pupils.

The school council have met three time so far this year. We have been discussing playtime, behaviour around school and any other concerns which have come up including house points and the new tables in the Junior School. 

We have also been looking at and discussing the anti-bullying policy and the positive behaviour policy.

17th October 2019

Today the year 5 and 6 school councillors came to the Infant school to help the year 2 school councillors run an assembly for citizenship week. The assembly was about mental health, about how unkind words and bullying can hurt us just as much as cuts and bruises. We also explored leaving people out of our games in the playground and how playtime can be a hard time if we have nobody to play with. After the assembly the year 5 and 6 school councillors spent some time in the Infant playground to see if their assembly had helped the children. Thank you to the year 5's and 6's for their wonderful help today. We look forward to the Junior school council assembly next term.

Guide dogs for the blind

We were lucky enough to receive a visit from a guide dog and her owner. Ava the guide dog came in with Eleanor to describe to us how guide dogs help and support people with limited or no vision. Pictures can be seen below, Eleanor was able to demonstrate how to harness a guide dog, and how Ava led her and helped Eleanor move around. 

The school council is currently organising some activities to raise money to train a guide dog and send them to school, we will update you as we hold these events.

Guide Dogs exists to provide life-changing services to the 360,000 people who are registered blind or partially sighted, and the two million people in the UK living with sight loss. Visit the Guide Dogs Uk website for more information.

Blue Day - Anti-bullying Day class promises

Choose Kindness - Antibullying Day - Blue Friday

This year for anti-bullying week the children have been learning about how to stand up to bullying. Bullying UK have been asking children to choose Kindness.

Each class made class pledge to help us to remember to stand up to bullying and choose kindness. Our Chair of Governors Mrs Marini came to help us release confetti (Biodegradable paper) as we read our pledges out. Please visit the gallery to see the photos.

Bullying UK: No-one ever knows the struggles people are going through inside and we believe that a simple act of kindness can help a person feel empowered to stand up to bullying. We are encouraging everyone to get involved in choosing kindness and be the reason to make someone smile.

Choosing kindness doesn't cost anything but can help someone enormously. We all have choices to make, do you #choosekindness?

• Choose kindness, as you never know what someone else is going through
• Saying something nice can bring a smile to someone's face
• Acts of kindness will never come back to hurt you and is never wasted on someone
• Being mean and hurting others can hurt someone very deeply, think twice about what you say or do
• Acts of kindness are good for you- they release oxytocin which lowers our blood pressure
• Being kind can help others feel happy and confident

Academic year 2018-2019 we have:

• Helped organise the CAFOD ‘Bright Day’.
• Helped to organise a Remembrance Day commemorative display, to celebrate 100 years of Armistice Day (1918 -2018)
• Ran an assembly about anti-bullying during anti- bullying week.
